India's Smriti Mandhana Confident Ahead of Women's Champions Trophy
Indian cricket captain Smriti Mandhana has expressed her confidence in the team's preparations for the inaugural ICC Women's Champions Trophy, set to take place in February next year on home soil. The team recently concluded a T20I series against Zimbabwe, securing a 3-0 victory, including a dominant 92-run win in the final match held in Raipur.
During the series, India employed a range of combinations, with bowlers such as Nandani Sharma, who took six wickets, and Kranti Gaud along with Niki Prasad, who each contributed three wickets. Mandhana indicated that the varied bowling strategies are vital, given that the conditions faced in the Zimbabwe series are expected to resemble those at the Champions Trophy.
"It (bowling options) is looking good for sure," Mandhana remarked. She emphasised the importance of adapting to the dew conditions that often affect matches this time of year. Mandhana added, "The kind of combination we need and the bowlers - the more the merrier. I’m really happy and pleased with the way Niki, Shafali (Verma), everyone chipped in."
Another highlight for India was the performance of former captain Harmanpreet Kaur. In the series finale, she scored an impressive unbeaten 91 from just 41 balls, featuring five sixes and ten fours. Kaur noted that without the burden of captaincy, she feels liberated to enjoy her time on the field.
"I don’t think there is any pressure anymore. I think now it's all about enjoying myself on the field and I think that's what I want to do," Kaur stated during the post-match presentation. Her statement reflects a significant shift in mindset, attributing her recent success to the freedom from captaincy responsibilities.
The Indian women's team will utilise the next few months to refine their strategies while preparing for the Champions Trophy. As their roster showcases promising talent and seasoned players, the squad aims to build on their recent successes to achieve a strong performance in the upcoming tournament.
