India and Russia Set for Key Discussions on Defence Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit India for the 23rd India-Russia annual summit on December 4 and 5, a meeting that holds significant implications for both nations and the global community. This visit marks President Putin's return to India after a four-year hiatus, during which international relations have undergone substantial changes, notably in the context of India’s ties with the United States and its energy procurement from Russia.

During this summit, President Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to engage in discussions that cover a wide range of topics, including military cooperation, technological exchanges, trade relations, and agricultural partnerships. The S-500, known as Prometheus, is designed to engage a wider array of aerial threats than its predecessor, including advanced ballistic missiles and low-orbit satellites. According to industry experts, the S-500 can target threats at altitudes of up to 200 kilometres, significantly surpassing the S-400's capabilities. The implications of acquiring such advanced technology could enhance India’s defensive posture amid regional security challenges, particularly from neighbours like China and Pakistan.

In addition to defence matters, Singh noted that discussions might also encompass agricultural cooperation, technology exchanges, and the facilitation of work permits for Indian professionals seeking employment in Russia. With many Western countries tightening immigration policies, Singh advocates for Indian citizens to explore opportunities within Russia, where there is a demand for skilled labour across various sectors.

"Russia is facing a shortage of skilled professionals, and there are opportunities for Indians to fill those gaps," Singh remarked. He urged Indian nationals to engage in the political sphere in Russia, drawing parallels between the political engagement styles of the two nations.
