India's Role in Ending Russia-Ukraine Conflict Grows: Ukraine Official
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has stated that India's proposal to help resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia is the most extensive and broad yet presented. He made these comments on Friday, highlighting India's willingness to take an active role in mediating the situation, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
Sybiha noted that this marked the first time India had indicated an intent to play such a mediatory role in the conflict that erupted following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which has led to significant loss of life and widespread destruction. He mentioned that Ukraine has received proposals from other nations as well, including Egypt, Turkey, and the United States.
The Foreign Minister elaborated on potential avenues for peace, stating that Ukraine is open to considering an energy and agricultural truce in the Black Sea. This truce would necessitate a complete halt to attacks on energy infrastructure, especially in port areas, which have seen escalating violence and damage, including incidents involving shipping vessels and civilians.
Sybiha also revealed that Kyiv is investigating the possibility of an unconditional ceasefire along the frontline with Russia, which could pave the way for future negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contributions to proposing viable solutions, describing them as “very good ideas.”
However, Putin dismissed an immediate cessation of long-range strikes, insisting that intensified military actions had to continue. He pointedly rejected suggestions that attacks on energy facilities could end if Russian attacks on Ukrainian ships were curtailed, labelling such conditionality as ridiculous.
The evolving dialogue suggests that while progress may hinge on broader international mediation, the situation remains complex and fluid. Analysts will be closely watching how India's involvement could shape the future course of the conflict and international relations in the region.
