India Pursues Comprehensive Semiconductor Value Chain Initiatives
Indian Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the country's ambition to establish a complete semiconductor value chain as part of the updated initiative dubbed ISM 2.0. This strategy aims to enhance India's position in the global semiconductor landscape by concentrating specifically on design firms.
During his address, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the critical role that semiconductor technology plays in modern electronics, emphasising the importance of not just manufacturing but also design capabilities. He mentioned that focusing on design allows for innovation and enables India to tap into various markets.
The ISM 2.0 initiative is designed to attract investment and promote research and development in semiconductor technologies, a sector currently dominated by a few countries. By fostering a domestic ecosystem for semiconductor design, India intends to reduce its dependence on imports and enhance self-sufficiency in technology.
Minister Vaishnaw stated, "Investment in a robust design sector is vital for achieving sustainable growth in the semiconductor industry." The Indian government’s efforts also include collaboration with international partners and startups to build a well-rounded ecosystem that encompasses various aspects of semiconductor development.
India’s semiconductor ambitions align with global trends, as countries worldwide recognise the vital role of these components in economic competitiveness and national security. Therefore, strengthening the domestic semiconductor landscape is seen as a strategic priority.
To support this vision, the Indian government is offering incentives to businesses engaged in semiconductor design and manufacturing. The aim is to create an environment conducive to innovation, ultimately leading to job creation and technological advancement.
Experts believe that building a comprehensive semiconductor value chain will not only fuel domestic industries but will also place India as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain. As the demand for semiconductors continues to rise in various sectors, India's proactive measures under ISM 2.0 may pave the way for significant opportunities in the future.
