India Joins Global 6G Initiative with US and 24 Other Nations

India has officially entered into a global partnership alongside the United States and 24 other nations to facilitate the development of next-generation sixth-generation (6G) telecommunications networks. This announcement was made by the US Department of Commerce on a social media platform following discussions that took place during the G20 Innovation Ministers’ Meeting held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on September 1-2, 2026.

The collaboration was finalised during a bilateral meeting between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and India's Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada. The initiative aims to ensure that future telecommunications networks align with shared security interests, boost competitiveness, and drive innovation in 6G technology.

During this meeting, Jitin Prasada expressed optimism regarding the potential of emerging technologies to significantly enhance productivity and create new opportunities around the world. The agreement underscores a collective interest in advancing the next phase of telecommunications, a field that is critical to the ongoing digital transformation of economies globally.

In conjunction with the 6G initiative, the G20 ministers also released an Innovation Ministerial Statement. This statement recognised the transformative power of emerging technologies in promoting economic growth and social progress. The discussions at the G20, co-hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, delved into areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and digital infrastructure.

This cooperation is viewed as part of India's broader strategy to enhance its role in shaping global technology policies. The partnership is not only significant for technological advancements but also reflects India's commitment to strategic international collaborations that further economic and innovative growth.

Jitin Prasada has also indicated that he engaged in several bilateral discussions during the event, reinforcing the importance of collaboration on critical areas such as AI and digital infrastructures.
