India's Jaishankar Warns of Risky Global Order Shifts
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlights changing global dynamics, calling them messy, risky, and potentially dangerous.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed the evolving global landscape at the Global Economic Cooperation conference, describing it as increasingly turbulent. He warned that the world is entering a 'twilight zone', where long-held assumptions about the international order are being questioned. Jaishankar remarked, 'This will be messy, risky, unpredictable, perhaps even dangerous.' He emphasised that the dynamics of global interactions are shifting, with political and strategic factors taking precedence over economic considerations.

Jaishankar outlined the challenges nations face today, noting the weaponisation of production and finance, and the tightening of export controls. He mentioned that uncertainties on the demand side, influenced by bilateral tariffs, further complicate the situation. According to Jaishankar, multiple dimensions—strategic, economic, technological—are transforming simultaneously, leading to a need for diversified solutions.

Reflecting on India’s position, he stated that the country is engaging more intensively with international partners, leveraging recent trade deals. He affirmed, 'The reform express will continue to roll on,' as India seeks to enhance its global economic ties from a position of strength. He pointed to the recently concluded trade agreements with the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Oman as evidence of this intensified engagement.

In discussing global economic strategies, Jaishankar highlighted the increasing competition in technology and the redefining of energy trade flows. He stressed that nations will respond according to their interests, and that migration and mobility issues are becoming contentious. Jaishankar’s remarks suggest a shift in how countries view economic cooperation, with a more pronounced focus on security and political ramifications.

As geopolitical tensions rise, the Minister's comments underline the complexities facing global economies in a rapidly shifting environment. Jaishankar concluded that nations must adapt to these changes through innovation and strategic planning to navigate the uncertain terrain ahead.
