India's Government Aims for Drug-Free Nation by 2029

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Sunday that the Indian government aims to achieve a drug-free nation by 2029. He stated that this initiative is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a developed India by 2047, which includes a youth population free from drug dependency. Speaking at a press conference in Panaji, Shah emphasised the government's commitment to combat drug abuse in a more comprehensive and systematic manner compared to previous efforts.

Amit Shah asserted that prior to 2014, the fight against narcotics was often isolated and limited in scope. He indicated that the current administration has repositioned the battle against drugs as a national security issue, aiming to elevate it above mere local operations. "Before 2014, the fight against narcotics was largely conducted in small units and isolation. Agencies were often satisfied catching small-time accused. Our government is making the fight national security priority," he said.

Shah also mentioned ongoing efforts to improve the internal security in regions affected by terrorism and insurgency. He highlighted significant reductions in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir and praised the abrogation of Article 370, which had previously granted special autonomy to the region. The Union Minister suggested that the sentiment for separatism has also diminished as a result of these changes.

Furthermore, Shah discussed the government's achievements regarding Naxalism, stating, "We have eradicated Naxalism and will deal with the menace of narcotics in the same manner." He underscored how the Modi administration has successfully engaged with various communities across India, maintaining that over 10,000 individuals have embraced mainstream society by renouncing violence and conflict.
