India's GDP Records 7.8% Growth Amid Global Challenges
India's economy demonstrated notable resilience as its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) registered a growth of 7.8% in the April to June quarter of the 2026-27 financial year. This figure, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marked an increase from the 6.9% growth recorded during the same quarter the previous year, although it fell short of the 8.6% growth seen in the preceding January to March quarter.
In a video address, Prime Minister Modi attributed this economic growth to the 'collective strength' and dedication of the Indian populace. He acknowledged that this achievement occurred despite ongoing global conflicts, economic instability, and disruptions to supply chains. "Since the 2020 COVID pandemic, there has been no stability anywhere, but India has progressed well," he stated.
The Prime Minister urged Indian citizens to continue this momentum by embracing self-reliance, a notion encapsulated in the term 'Atmanirbhar', promoting domestic products and services as a means to bolster the national economy. He emphasised the importance of the 'Swadeshi' movement, which encourages citizens to buy Indian-made goods. "The more we emphasise Swadeshi, the more we emphasise self-reliance," Modi commented, expressing hope that this approach would help India present a more developed image to future generations by the time it celebrates a centenary of independence.
As part of his economic strategy, Modi called on citizens to limit foreign leisure travel and to choose domestic alternatives, integrating these shifts into the broader goal of supporting local economies. He also addressed traditional customs, suggesting that couples avoid tying the knot abroad and instead consider Indian venues, to keep spending within the nation.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister advised caution concerning gold purchases, stating, "Unless necessary, do not buy gold." He remarked that cutting down on unnecessary foreign expenses could positively impact India's economic standing, particularly as the nation imports much of its gold, affecting external finances.
Modi's message arrives in the context of persistent global economic challenges, reinforcing the government's push towards economic autonomy. His appeal echoes previous requests from earlier this year, when he advised conserving resources and supporting local production amidst rising geopolitical tensions. The encouraging GDP growth figures serve as a backdrop for this renewed call towards self-reliance and economic fortitude among the Indian people.
