India in Command as Rain Threatens Sri Lanka's Test Hopes
India has put itself in a strong position in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, with the hosts ending day four at 84 for 4. Chasing a daunting target of 372 runs, Sri Lanka now needs an additional 288 runs to achieve an unlikely victory.
In a challenging turn of events for Sri Lanka, Dinesh Chandimal was ruled out of the match after sustaining a blow to his head and shoulder while fielding. Although he underwent a scan which cleared him of serious injury, he failed the concussion test and was replaced by Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who struggled in his debut appearance, getting dismissed for a duck after being trapped lbw by Manav Suthar.
Sri Lanka began their fourth innings on a cautious note but quickly suffered setbacks. Following a brief rain interruption, the team lost Nishan Fernando, who was caught pulling a delivery from Mohammed Siraj. Prasidh Krishna then removed Kamindu Mendis after executing a clever bowling strategy involving deliveries that moved into the left-hander before one angled away.
As the day progressed, Suthar took two crucial wickets, leaving Sri Lanka reeling in their pursuit. As it stands, Devdutt Padikkal, who shone earlier with a score of 44 in India's second innings alongside Rishabh Pant’s aggressive 66, and KL Rahul’s 35 helped India set the significant target. Padikkal's innings followed his earlier 167, highlighting his consistent performance amid challenging conditions.
The pressure built by India’s bowlers has added to Sri Lanka's woes. With six wickets remaining, the hosts face a steep hill. The current match statistics report that the highest successful chase in Galle has only been 344 runs, achieved by Pakistan in 2022. Targets over 200 have been successfully chased twice at this venue since 1998.
As Sri Lanka hopes lie primarily with Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha, they face an uphill battle against a spirited Indian bowling attack. The final day will see if Sri Lanka can turn the tide or if India can secure a solid victory in the first Test.
