Everyday Habits That Could Undermine Kidney Health Revealed
Experts highlight everyday habits that may silently harm your kidneys, stressing the importance of awareness and healthy choices.

The kidneys perform vital functions in the body, filtering blood and removing toxins. However, signs of kidney distress often remain unnoticed until significant damage occurs. Dr Urmila Anandh, Senior Consultant and Head of Nephrology at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, emphasises, “Pain is not a common warning sign of kidney disease. That’s what makes it dangerous.”

Kidney function can be jeopardised by several everyday habits, which often go unnoticed until it is too late. Here are six habits that individuals may want to reconsider in light of maintaining healthy kidney function.

Firstly, the often casual use of pain relief medication can have severe implications. Common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen, may produce adverse effects, especially when used frequently. Continued use of these medications can lead to reduced blood flow through the kidneys and in some cases, acute kidney injury. The risk escalates when NSAIDs are taken during periods of dehydration or illness, according to Dr. Anandh. Patients with pre-existing conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure should exercise particular caution.

Secondly, dietary sodium is another critical aspect. While many associate salt intake solely with table seasoning, a significant amount of sodium comes from packaged and processed foods. This hidden sodium may not even taste salty but can lead to fluid retention and elevated blood pressure over time. It is crucial to be mindful of sodium intake, particularly from processed snacks and restaurant meals, as this can lead to cumulative damage.

A reliance on fast, packaged foods can contribute to poor dietary habits. While an occasional ready meal is not inherently problematic, consistently choosing these options may lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and increased blood pressure, subsequently heightening kidney risks. A balanced approach involving fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential for overall health.

Hydration is another area where misconceptions prevail. Consuming excessive amounts of water without medical justification does not benefit kidney health, as proper hydration depends on various factors. Dehydration, particularly during hot weather or physical exertion, can stress kidneys. Conversely, over-hydrating can also pose risks, especially for individuals with certain medical conditions.

Smoking poses additional risks to kidney health. Often associated primarily with lung and cardiovascular diseases, smoking’s detrimental effects extend to kidney function as well. Dr. Anandh points out that smoking damages blood vessels, undoubtedly impacting kidneys’ ability to filter blood effectively.

Lastly, regular monitoring for individuals at risk of kidney disease is essential. High blood pressure and diabetes are leading causes of chronic kidney disease. Regular tests for serum creatinine can assist in early identification of risk, enabling timely intervention.

In conclusion, those at a higher risk, including individuals with a family history of kidney disease or existing health conditions, should consider regular discussions about kidney health with their healthcare provider. Proactive measures can make a significant difference in maintaining kidney function over time.
