India and China Engage in Constructive Border Talks
India and China hold comprehensive discussions on border management, aiming to normalise relations after recent tensions along the Line of Actual Control.

On May 27, 2026, a significant meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) took place in Beijing, as India and China aimed to improve their strained relations. The Indian delegation was directed by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary for East Asia, while the Chinese side was led by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the discussions, both nations engaged in constructive dialogues regarding border delimitation and management strategies. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, the two sides reviewed the existing situation along the India-China border and expressed satisfaction with the progress in maintaining peace and tranquillity in the area, contributing to a gradual normalisation of bilateral relations.

Key topics included not only border management but also the establishment of mechanisms and cross-border cooperation. The Indian delegation underscored the necessity for a timely meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers.

Both countries consented to maintain regular exchanges at both diplomatic and military levels through agreed-upon mechanisms, including those established during the 24th Special Representatives (SR) Talks. Preparations for the forthcoming SR meeting, scheduled to occur in China, were also discussed.

In an informal meeting, Sujit Ghosh had discussions with Liu Jinsong, Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and paid a visit to Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement indicating that both sides held a productive dialogue in a practical and amicable environment, recognising the sustained peace and stability in border areas.

The dialogue sought to address the consensus reached during the 24th round of talks concerning the boundary question, covering vital areas such as boundary delimitation and cross-border communication. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace along the border and advancing preparations for the upcoming 25th round of talks regarding the boundary issue.
