India Celebrates 80th Independence Day at Red Fort
Vande Mataram resonates as India marks its 80th Independence Day, celebrating unity at the historic Red Fort.

The historic Red Fort in Delhi hosted a vibrant celebration on August 15, marking India's 80th Independence Day. Hundreds of attendees, including school students, volunteers, and beneficiaries of various government schemes, gathered to partake in this significant occasion.

For the first time, "Vande Mataram," India's national song, was played from the ramparts of the fort, creating a poignant atmosphere during the ceremonies. Around 5,000 special guests attended, including participants from the International Yoga Day, women entrepreneurs supported by the Prime Minister's Mudra Yojana, and beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event with the hoisting of the National Flag, followed by a ceremonial 21-gun salute by the 1721 Field Battery. The event was enhanced by an Army band playing the national song while guests joined in unison.

Following the flag hoisting, two Mi-17 helicopters from the Indian Air Force flew overhead, showering flower petals on the gathering below, marking a visual celebration. Decorations at the venue featured floral arrangements in the colours of the national flag, and prose with the words "Vande Mataram" in Hindi highlighted the ramparts.

Guests expressed their excitement and admiration. Eight-year-old Deepak Bishnoi, who attended the event in a Scouts uniform, stated, "I came to catch a glimpse of the PM, tour the historic Red Fort, and watch helicopters."

The weather also played a surprising role in the proceedings. As the Prime Minister began his address at 7:37 a.m., dark clouds overhead began to clear, creating a sunny backdrop for the celebrations. Thirteen-year-old Yash Rawat, a local student, commented, "I live very close to the Red Fort, and it rains almost every year on Independence Day. Thankfully, it didn’t rain, and I was able to enjoy my first visit to an I-Day event without interruptions."

For some attendees, attending the event was a long-cherished dream. Deepika Singh Singraur, a lecturer from Gurugram, expressed her excitement, saying, "It has finally been fulfilled today. Next year, I am surely going to bring my daughter as well."

The event not only allowed participants to witness a historical moment but also offered a break from their daily routines, as highlighted by Udit Narayan, a 36-year-old engineer who found the event to be a refreshing change. Many attendees took the opportunity to capture selfies in front of the iconic Red Fort.

This year's celebrations showcased India's commitment to unity and remembrance in light of its historical and cultural heritage. As preparations for the next year commence, the spirit of patriotism continues to resonate among citizens.
