India Attends Funeral of Iran's Former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei
The Embassy of Iran in India has thanked the Government of India and its citizens for their participation in the funeral ceremonies of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The embassy stated that the attendance of various Indian political leaders, Members of Parliament, scholars, and representatives from diverse faiths showcases the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and human connections between the two countries. This appreciation was conveyed in a social media post by the Iranian embassy. According to reports, approximately 100 individuals from the Indian state of Karnataka also attended the funeral proceedings held in Tehran. Many of these attendees are natives of Alipura in Chikkaballapur district, a village known for its ties to Ayatollah Khamenei, who had previously visited the area. Some attendees are already residing in Iran, pursuing studies in religious institutions, working in medical fields, or engaging in business, while others journeyed from Bengaluru to Tehran on a chartered Iran Air flight. The tragic death of Khamenei, who was killed in a joint airstrike by the United States and Israel on February 28, has resonated deeply within the Iranian community. With Khamenei also losing close family members, including his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, the loss is perceived as a national tragedy. Residents of Alipura expressed their profound grief, highlighting that for many, Khamenei was revered more than a father figure. The funeral, attended by representatives from over 100 nations, including India, is seen as a testament to Iran's stability and the importance of its relationships despite ongoing regional tensions. The 40-day mourning period following Khamenei's death, along with a week-long public holiday, reflects a collective national sentiment, uniting personal mourning with national solidarity. Mr. Hakim Raza, president of the Indo-Iran Chamber of Commerce and Industries, noted that Iran's policy regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains focused on its stability and accessibility, crucial for nations like India reliant on energy security. The attendance of an Indian political delegation at the funeral is interpreted as a demonstration of the enduring bonds between Iran and India.
