Dalai Lama Reflects on His Life and Legacy at 91
His Holiness the Dalai Lama marks his 91st birthday today, July 6, reflecting on a life dedicated to the Tibetan cause. The Tibetan spiritual leader has been an influential figure in bringing attention to the plight of his people since he fled Lhasa in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule. For the past 67 years, the Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India, where he has continued to advocate for Tibet internationally.
Sethu Das, Founder of the Friends of Tibet Foundation, stated, "Only the Dalai Lama could have kept the Tibet issue alive the way he did." Das highlights the Dalai Lama's qualities as a negotiator, noting his blend of compassion with a formidable negotiating style. He elaborated on the Dalai Lama's character, saying that despite the common perception of him as a gentle spiritual leader, he can be quite assertive in his advocacy work.
The Friends of Tibet Foundation has recently released a book of cartoons titled "Indian Cartoonists on Tibet 1950-2025." This curated collection illustrates the responses of Indian cartoonists to the Tibetan issue and the evolving India-China relations over the past seven decades.
Sethu Das explained how his association with the Dalai Lama began. Initially unaware of the Tibetan community's struggles, his epiphany occurred when he fortuitously found himself in Dharamsala. There, he started an e-mail club to spread awareness about Tibet and the Dalai Lama's life, later formalising it into the Friends of Tibet in 1999.
His first meeting with the Dalai Lama took place in 2000 during the Festival of Tibet in Mumbai, where he accompanied His Holiness to various events. Das recounted the Dalai Lama's enthusiasm at the festival and noted significant changes in His Holiness's health over the years.
Reflecting on their interactions, Das shared that he lived near Dharamsala for several years, participating in regular meetings with the Dalai Lama focused on Tibet's political issues and community matters. He described moments where blessings were exchanged, along with small gifts, indicating the personal connection that developed over time.
When asked about the Dalai Lama's most striking traits, Das pointed out that while many would cite his compassion, he believes the Dalai Lama's negotiating skills are equally noteworthy. His determination is evident in the way he tackles challenging discussions regarding Tibetan autonomy.
One significant memory Das shared involved a monk who travelled from Tibet to convey a crucial message regarding protests during the Olympics. The monk's words highlighted the urgency of the situation in Tibet and reminded the Dalai Lama of the shared responsibility to advocate for change.
Das concluded by expressing the transformative influence the Dalai Lama has had on his own life and those of countless others. He stated, "Being closer to the Tibetan community changed my life, and eventually, I ended up joining the Dalai Lama." The initiative behind the new book aims to educate and reach wider audiences about Tibet’s story, underpinning a non-profit objective that strives to create awareness and empathy around the Tibetan cause.
