India Approves ₹20,800 Crore Multitracking Projects for Railways

The Indian government has recently approved a series of multitracking railway projects worth ₹20,800 crore, aimed at improving rail connectivity across nine states. This decision, taken during a Cabinet meeting, signifies an investment in five key projects concentrated in four southern states: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.

The approved projects are set to expand Indian Railways' existing network by approximately 540 kilometres. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of these initiatives on the social media platform X, stating, “Five major railway projects worth over ₹10,000 crore. Better rail connectivity in South India.” He added that “Lakhs of people will benefit,” indicating the broader impact of these developments on passenger transportation and freight movement.

Among the notable projects included in this approval is a 110-kilometre multitracking initiative from Ghatkesar, located near Hyderabad, to Kazipet via Yadagirigutta in Telangana. This particular project carries an estimated cost of ₹2,419 crore. Additionally, the plan encompasses the laying down of third and fourth railway lines between various key junctions, including Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu and Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh, as well as between Whitefield and Bangarapet in Karnataka.

These enhancements are expected to facilitate faster passenger movement and bolster freight capacity, addressing ongoing infrastructure needs in the region. The Indian Railways has been under pressure to improve its services and connectivity, and this step marks a significant commitment towards that goal.
