India Aims to Equalise Series Against South Africa in Guwahati Test
India faces South Africa in the second Test in Guwahati, needing a win to level the series after loss in Kolkata. Kuldeep Yadav shines with three wickets.

The second Test match between India and South Africa is taking place in Guwahati, where India is under pressure to secure a victory to avoid losing the series at home. After suffering a defeat in the first Test in Kolkata, the Indian team finds itself in a challenging position against the current World Test Champions. South Africa, who won the first match by 30 runs, are aiming for their first Test series victory in India in 25 years.

On the opening day of the match, South Africa batted first and managed to score 247 runs for the loss of six wickets at stumps. Indian assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate expressed confidence in his team's bowling capabilities, stating that the focus was on executing their best performance in the second day’s play. "I don't want to put a number on the score. I think it's really important that we come out and put our best foot forward, our best bowling foot forward tomorrow morning," said ten Doeschate.

Kuldeep Yadav emerged as the standout bowler for India, taking three wickets and playing a vital role in dismantling the South African batting order. His scalps included key players Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs, who were both instrumental in building partnerships for their team. Ten Doeschate praised Kuldeep’s skills, noting, "Three wickets on that surface on day one... He's a wicket taker and that's why we're picking him."

Despite a solid start, South Africa's batsmen were unable to convert their promising positions into substantial scores. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram both fell in their 30s, while Stubbs and captain Temba Bavuma were dismissed after scoring 49 and 41 runs, respectively. The Indian bowlers maintained disciplined line and length, preventing any of the South African batsmen from establishing a big innings.

The day's play was highlighted by the aggressive bowling of Kuldeep Yadav, who finished with impressive figures of three wickets for 48 runs. His performance was complemented by Mohammed Siraj, who contributed to the bowling effort by claiming the wicket of Tony de Zorzi.

As the match progressed, the Indian bowlers were consistent in applying pressure, making it difficult for the South African batsmen to settle in. Ten Doeschate noted, "I think we kept pressure on for long periods of time... when scoring is not that easy, it adds pressure onto the batting units."

India currently sits fourth in the ICC World Test Championship standings with a points percentage of 54.17. Ten Doeschate highlighted the importance of capitalising on home conditions to improve their chances of reaching the finals. "Some of the tours you go on are really tough to pick up more than 50% of the points. We know it's going to be around about 60% to qualify for that final. If you do the math, your home series are really important," he explained.

The match is being played at India's newest Test venue, with an enthusiastic crowd of over 15,000 spectators witnessing the action on the first day. As the series continues, both teams will be keen to secure crucial points for their standings in the championship.

Looking ahead, India will be eager to take early wickets on the second day to build momentum and challenge South Africa's lower order, while the visitors will aim to solidify their position and push for a significant first-innings lead.
