India Advises Caution for Citizens in Italy and Albania Amid Unrest
The Indian embassies in Italy and Albania issued advisories on Monday urging Indian nationals to exercise caution amidst unrest affecting both nations. In Milan, protests erupted over escalating living costs and inadequate public services, leading to violent clashes between demonstrators and police. Reports from Reuters indicate that these disturbances have spread to other cities, including Bologna, Brescia, Bergamo, and Turin.
Protests in Albania have also become increasingly tense as citizens demand improved conditions for universities, an end to corruption, and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. According to the BBC, demonstrations have now been ongoing for seven consecutive days, with significant confrontations occurring in the capital, Tirana. The Prime Minister claimed that some protesters have crossed a warning line, particularly following an incident where a police station was set on fire and petrol bombs were thrown at law enforcement officers, as reported by AFP.
The Indian embassy in Rome advised its citizens to avoid crowded areas and protests, staying informed through local news regarding the situation. Similarly, the Indian diplomatic mission in Tirana warned citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to instructions from local authorities.
Emphasising the small size of Tirana and Albania as a whole, the advisory noted that disturbances in one area could quickly escalate elsewhere. Individuals were cautioned against unnecessary travel to areas notably affected, particularly in central Tirana, including Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard and Mother Teresa Square. Furthermore, access to government buildings and other potential confrontation sites should be avoided to ensure personal safety.
These advisories come amidst a backdrop of rising tensions in both countries where citizen dissent is manifesting through increased protests driven by socio-economic grievances. The embassies' warnings highlight the need for vigilance in potentially volatile situations as authorities respond to public unrest.
