I-PAC Pauses Operations in West Bengal Amid Enforcement Directorate Raids
Political consultancy I-PAC halts West Bengal operations following ED raids and arrests connected to alleged coal smuggling.

The Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) has temporarily suspended its operations in West Bengal, as revealed by sources familiar with the situation. This decision comes in the wake of recent actions taken by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at various locations linked to the firm, which has been providing consultancy services to the Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the lead-up to the state assembly elections.

According to reports, the ED conducted searches in key cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi earlier this month, focusing on an alleged case of coal smuggling and pilferage in West Bengal. Among the premises searched were those associated with I-PAC's co-founder and director Rishi Raj Singh. The firm has played a significant role in the political landscape in India, notably assisting several political campaigns.

In a significant development, Vinesh Chandel, another director and co-founder of I-PAC, was arrested earlier this week in connection with the investigation. As a result of these recent developments, I-PAC has informed its staff in West Bengal to take a 20-day leave, with operations set to be reassessed by May 11. The state assembly elections are scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and 29, with results expected on May 4.

The actions against I-PAC follow an incident in January when Chief Minister Banerjee publicly disputed the ED’s authority during a raid at the residence of I-PAC chief Pratik Jain in Kolkata. Banerjee had exited the location with documents she asserted contained information about her political party.

I-PAC, founded by consultant-turned-politician Prashant Kishor in 2013, gained recognition for its strategic campaign work. Originally associated with Narendra Modi’s successful 2014 campaign, the organisation has since contributed to various political efforts across the country, including campaigns for Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi and Punjab, the Congress Party in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

In recent years, Kishor has distanced himself from I-PAC to launch his own political party named Jan Suraaj. Nonetheless, I-PAC continues to support other political entities, such as YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and M.K. Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and has recently begun assisting Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.

The current developments concerning I-PAC highlight the ongoing tensions in West Bengal’s political arena as the state approaches its assembly elections, with investigations into alleged corruption intensifying. As the parties gear up for crucial electoral battles, the implications of these investigations remain to be seen.
