Two US Citizens Detained at Srinagar Airport Over Satellite Phone
Two American nationals were detained at Srinagar Airport after a satellite phone was found in their luggage during a routine check.

Two US nationals were detained at Srinagar International Airport on Sunday after a satellite phone was discovered in their luggage during a routine security screening. The individuals were initially questioned by airport security and subsequently handed over to police for further investigation.

The police confirmed that one of the individuals, whose bag contained the satellite phone, has been arrested. In India, the use of satellite phones is prohibited without prior government approval, with stringent regulations governing devices such as Thuraya and Iridium phones. Unauthorized possession can lead to detention, arrest, and equipment seizure under the Indian Telegraph Act and related security regulations.

As per guidelines from the Indian government, travellers are required to obtain written permission from the Department of Telecommunications before carrying satellite communication devices into the country. Indian authorities enforce strict telecommunications regulations due to national security concerns, and both foreign nationals and Indian citizens have been subjected to legal action in the past for carrying unauthorised satellite communicators.

For instance, a US-based ophthalmologist was apprehended at Puducherry airport last May when an Iridium satellite phone was found in her possession. Authorities prevented her from boarding a flight to Hyderabad, initiating a police investigation. Additionally, previous cases involving foreign nationals include a Chinese citizen and a British executive, who were detained for carrying unauthorised satellite devices at airports and hotels throughout India.

In response to these incidents, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has informed airlines operating flights to India to alert passengers about the ban on satellite phones through in-flight announcements and other communications.

Foreign governments have also begun to issue travel advisories emphasising the strict regulations surrounding satellite phones in India. Advisories from both the US and the UK warn citizens that bringing satellite phones or similar GPS devices into India could lead to substantial fines, confiscation of equipment, or arrest. Overall, these developments underscore India's firm stance on telecommunications security and the regulatory measures in place to ensure compliance among foreign nationals.
