Huawei Unveils Watch D3 with Integrated Blood Pressure Monitoring

Huawei has launched its latest smartwatch, the Huawei Watch D3, which distinguishes itself by incorporating a system for monitoring blood pressure. Unlike standard fitness trackers that mainly focus on acceleration and heart rate, this innovative device employs an inflatable band, simulating the function of a blood pressure cuff typically found in medical settings.

Other smartwatches have mechanisms for detecting high blood pressure, but the Huawei Watch D3 provides both on-demand and continuous blood pressure readings throughout the day. This allows for a more comprehensive assessment of heart health over time.

The Watch D3 is Huawei's third generation of this concept, and it exhibits a design similar to typical smartwatches. It features a 1.92-inch AMOLED display with an impressive brightness of up to 3,000 nits. The watch measures 0.44 inches (11.3 mm) in thickness and weighs 1.41 ounces (40 grams).

A key improvement in this model is the narrower airbag integrated into the watchband, which promises to be both more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, available in Mocha Gold, Gold, and Black shades.

Thanks to this innovative band, the Huawei Watch D3 can measure blood pressure in a manner akin to that of traditional cuffs. Additionally, it incorporates Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM), enabling it to check blood pressure at specified intervals across a 24-hour timespan. This feature complements other metrics tracked by the watch, such as pulse rate, offering a well-rounded view of the user's health.

The watch is designed to remind users to take readings before and after physical activities or when faced with factors like altitude or temperature that may influence blood pressure levels. In addition to its health monitoring capabilities, it retains essential smartwatch functionalities, including workout and sleep tracking.

Huawei's approach to blood pressure monitoring sets it apart from other tech companies. Notably, Apple and Google mainly offer trend tracking, avoiding more invasive monitoring that could attract regulatory scrutiny. Competitors like Vital Signals aim to provide detailed insights through algorithms similar to those used by the Oura Ring 5, but Huawei's device comes closest to replicating professional medical equipment's performance.

The Huawei Watch D3 will be made available at a price point of £400 or approximately $540. However, due to existing restrictions on Huawei products in the United States, it remains inaccessible to consumers in that market.
