HPV Vaccination Workshops Conducted in Kiphire and Mon Districts
District-level workshops addressing Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination have recently taken place in Kiphire and Mon, targeting community awareness and overcoming vaccine hesitancy. Organised by the District Task Force on Immunisation (DTFI) in collaboration with Jhpiego, the Kiphire workshop convened at the District Hospital's conference hall. The primary goal was to review the HPV vaccination programme's progress, pinpoint challenges, and devise strategies to enhance programme delivery through collaborative actions among various stakeholders.
Jhpiego outlined the workshop's objectives while the district immunisation officer reported on vaccination statistics in Kiphire. Discussions centred on the significance of HPV vaccination as a preventative measure against cervical cancer, alongside community engagement approaches. Key topics included developing communication resources, addressing public misconceptions, and strategies for alleviating vaccine hesitancy.
A similar workshop occurred in Mon on October 9, where health officials, community leaders, and representatives from various organisations collaborated to discuss HPV vaccination strategies aimed at improving uptake. Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, highlighted the crucial role that community education plays in public health initiatives, encouraging local organisations to promote awareness among parents.
Dr. Supongmenla Walling, Chief Medical Officer for Mon, underscored Jhpiego's support for local vaccination efforts, indicating that despite having conducted 116 out of 118 planned vaccination sessions, only 54 out of a target of 2,235 adolescent girls had received the vaccine. This statistic illustrates the pressing need for intensified outreach and community involvement.
Senior Advisor Raju Tamang from Jhpiego further emphasised the necessity of stakeholder participation in increasing vaccination rates, calling for a collective effort among health authorities, schools, and community groups to foster public confidence in the vaccine. He encouraged stakeholders to share successful practices from neighbouring regions, tailor these to local conditions, and engage with the community to improve access to vaccination services.
As workshops concluded, participants engaged in discussions on concrete steps their organisations could take to boost vaccination uptake, reaffirming their commitment to addressing barriers and encouraging parents to secure vaccinations for their daughters.
