Houthi Attacks Disrupt Red Sea Shipping, Heighten Regional Tensions

The Houthi movement from Yemen has initiated recent assaults on shipping in the Red Sea, raising alarms about their potential to escalate existing tensions in the Middle East. This resurgence follows a breakdown of a prior ceasefire between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, leading to increased confrontations in a crucial maritime corridor.

Houthi claims indicate that they have attacked two Saudi oil tankers and disrupted the passage of at least ten additional vessels, warning ships to avoid Saudi ports. This has significant implications for the Bab El Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping route that connects the southern end of the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. Disruption in this area could harm global economic stability, particularly affecting energy and agricultural supply chains as over 12% of the world’s trade, including a substantial portion of container traffic, typically traverses this strait.

In conjunction with the increased aggression from the Houthis, US-Iranian hostilities are on the rise, with US Central Command conducting airstrikes against Iranian military facilities. This has compounded concerns for Gulf nations that traditionally enjoy relative tranquillity, impacting their security perception as Iran aims to assert power through proxy groups like the Houthis.

Saudi Arabia, which has engaged in warfare against the Houthis since 2015 in support of Yemen’s ousted government, has been strategically working to mitigate the challenge posed by Iranian-backed forces. The kingdom has partially diverted oil exports via its East-West Pipeline to maintain steady output despite tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. However, increased Houthi threats could jeopardise these efforts.

US President Donald Trump has responded with aggressive rhetoric towards the Houthis, suggesting potential military repercussions for further strikes on vessels. He has described the Houthis as a proxy for Iran, indicating that the US holds Tehran culpable for these actions.

The prolonged conflict has created a complex web of alliances and hostilities in the region. Analysts have warned that while some areas like Iraq and Syria have seen an improvement in stability, the Gulf remains precarious. The conflict has led to fears of a broader military engagement, particularly with the US intensifying its military presence as it seeks to protect crucial trade routes.

These tensions come at a time when the consequences of economic disruptions are already being felt globally, as shipping routes become increasingly threatened. The situation is further exacerbated by the deal facilitating US support for Saudi Arabia's nuclear energy ambitions, which in turn raises concerns about an arms race in the region.

In response to these developments, the European Union has expressed concern, urging the Houthis to halt their threats against maritime navigation. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasised the need for immediate de-escalation to ensure the safety of international shipping lanes and the welfare of seafarers.
