Hindu Community Protests in Dhaka Over Lord Ram Statue Threats
Thousands of Hindus took to the streets of Dhaka on 19 June, chanting slogans in support of Lord Ram, in response to alleged threats against the construction of an 81-foot statue dedicated to him. The protests were sparked by the suspension of construction work on the statue in Palashbari, Gaibandha district, following threats from Islamist groups. The Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple committee, responsible for the temple complex, confirmed that they halted work due to fears for safety. The committee president, Haridas Chandra Das, expressed profound concern, stating, "We are scared, and in fear and out of fear, we have kept the work suspended." He called upon Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for intervention regarding this issue. Another committee adviser, Shyamlal Kumar Mahanta, indicated that the decision to pause construction aimed to safeguard social harmony, emphasising their desire to avoid inciting conflict or causing offence to other religious sentiments. The demonstration, organised by the Hindu Mahajot, began at the Shahbagh intersection and concluded at the National Press Club, where protesters formed a human chain. In nearby Rangpur, police intervened during a separate protest, resulting in minor scuffles. Protesters accused the government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of failing to act decisively against the threats. They issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the arrest of those responsible, warning that if construction does not resume, the Hindu community intends to establish Ram temples across all 64 districts in Bangladesh. Additionally, the National Committee for Puja Celebrations has planned nationwide protests set for Saturday. Recent reports have noted rising communal tensions in Bangladesh, with 133 incidents of violence documented earlier this year. The Hindu community's protests reflect increasing frustrations over perceived discrimination and insecurity, especially regarding religious sentiments. They have called for government accountability and protection of their rights amid the rising sectarian tensions in the country.
