Gujarat Reports Over 15 Lakh Mental Health Cases in 2025-26
Gujarat has reported a total of 1.543 million mental health cases in government hospitals for the financial year 2025-26, a substantial increase from 1.123 million cases recorded in 2018-19. The latest data indicates a worrying rise in several mental health conditions, particularly depression, which has now surpassed 300,000 cases, reaching 306,477.
Anxiety-related cases also saw a significant increase, rising from 204,361 in 2018-19 to 265,487 in the last reporting period. Additionally, schizophrenia cases increased from 163,206 to 216,182, while mood disorders climbed from 127,058 to 173,007.
Among children, the prevalence of mental health issues has surged as well. Cases related to childhood disorders rose from 56,298 to 91,916, marking an approximate 63 per cent rise. Early identification of emotional and behavioural difficulties in children is crucial, and parents, schools, and mental health professionals are encouraged to provide timely support.
Older adults are also facing a rising number of mental health concerns. The number of cases reported among senior citizens has risen, from around 50,000 six years ago to approximately 85,000 currently. Contributing factors to these difficulties may include loneliness, retirement, physical health issues, and decreased social engagement.
Dr Ajay Chawda from the Government Mental Hospital highlighted that mental distress can often remain concealed, even when individuals seem to be in good spirits. He urged those experiencing difficulties to seek help, noting that the fear of stigma can prevent many from discussing their issues or accessing professional care.
As World Mental Health Day approaches on 10 October, the rise in mental health cases underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness and accessible mental health services across Gujarat. It is vital to encourage open conversations around mental health, recognise early warning signs, and facilitate timely intervention to promote greater well-being in all age groups.
The data illustrates the growing need for an effective response to mental health challenges, prioritising early diagnosis and the provision of professional support throughout the state.
