GoPro Launches Mission 1 Pro with 8K Video and Advanced Features
GoPro introduces the Mission 1 Pro, featuring 8K video, 50MP photos, and innovative capabilities, expanding into the action cinema market.

GoPro has unveiled its latest product line, the Mission 1 series, with the standout model being the Mission 1 Pro. This camera aims to redefine the action camera space by offering features traditionally reserved for professional filming equipment.

The Mission 1 Pro is designed with a Type 1 sensor, allowing for video capture at resolutions of up to 8K at 60 frames per second, including an Open Gate function that provides a wider aspect ratio. The new model can produce images at a staggering 50 megapixels.

Scheduled for release later this year, the Mission 1 ILS will offer an interchangeable lens system, supporting Micro Four Thirds lenses, marking a significant shift in GoPro's strategy towards more versatile imaging options.

Key to the functionality of the Mission 1 series is GoPro’s improved GP3 processor. This processor enables features including an enhanced thermal management system and superior low-light performance, along with the ability to shoot slow-motion video at 960 frames per second.

GoPro claims that the sensor within the Mission 1 Pro is considerably larger—25.4% more significant than that of its main competitor, the DJI Osmo Action 6, and 43.8% larger than that found in the Insta360 Ace Pro 2. The implications of this larger sensor for low-light capabilities are substantial; GoPro asserts it provides 77% more light capture per pixel at 8K resolution.

In addition to high-resolution capabilities, the camera supports advanced recording formats, including GP-Log2, which provides a 10-bit log profile suitable for professional workflows. The device is equipped with multiple features tailored for content creators, such as real-time monitoring of white balance, exposure variables, and HDR capture.

Physically, the Mission 1 Pro is designed for durability, boasting waterproofing to depths of 66 feet, which can extend to 196 feet with an optional dive case. Other physical enhancements include raised buttons for ease of use while wearing gloves and a larger OLED screen for improved user interaction.

Battery life is a crucial consideration for video professionals. The new Enduro 2 battery reportedly offers a 13% increase in capacity compared to its predecessor, ensuring extended recording times. Tests indicate the maximum recording time for the Mission 1 Pro can reach five hours under specific conditions, particularly when shooting in 1080p Full HD at standard frame rates.

Various intelligent capture modes, such as subject tracking and settings optimised for underwater shooting, have also been included. With modes ranging from time-lapse to slow motion, the camera is positioned not just as an action camera but as a versatile tool in the content creation ecosystem.

GoPro intends to make the Mission 1 Pro available for pre-order from May 21, with widespread sales beginning on May 28. However, details regarding pricing remain undisclosed, pending resolution of ongoing supply challenges related to flash memory.

In summary, the Mission 1 series represents GoPro's strategic pivot towards more complex imaging solutions, aiming to create cameras that cater to professional content creators and filmmakers, thereby broadening their market reach and enhancing their competitive stance in the rapidly evolving digital imaging landscape.
