Google Releases Android 16 QPR2 Update for Pixel Devices
The Android 16 QPR2 update introduces new features, enhancements, and security updates for a wide range of Pixel smartphones.

Google has announced the rollout of the Android 16 QPR2 update, marking a significant upgrade for its Pixel smartphone line. This update, which commenced in December 2025, is available for devices including the Pixel 6 series and newer models, such as the Pixel 10 family.

Overview of the Update

The Android 16 QPR2 update introduces a variety of new features aimed at enhancing user experience and device functionality. Notably, it includes improved personalisation options, productivity enhancements, and several security upgrades.

Key Features of Android 16 QPR2

One of the standout features of this update is the introduction of lockscreen widgets. Users can access these widgets by swiping left on the lockscreen, which reveals a new feed containing various widgets. A small design modification enables users to tap on the two-line clock to make it bolder, accompanied by haptic feedback. To activate the lockscreen widgets, users should navigate to Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen > Widgets on lock screen. While these widgets are visible without unlocking the device, users will need to authenticate to access the corresponding applications.

Users can personalise their widget feed by long-pressing on the lockscreen, allowing them to resize or remove widgets easily. The updated widget picker now includes tabs for Featured and Browse, providing a more streamlined experience.

Enhanced Notification Management

The Android 16 QPR2 update also introduces a notification organiser, which automatically categorises low-priority notifications such as news, promotions, and social alerts. These grouped notifications are displayed at the bottom of the notification shade, helping users to manage alerts more efficiently. When minimised, these notifications appear as stacked app icons, reducing clutter on the screen.

Customisation Options

In addition to the notification enhancements, users can now select custom icon shapes via Wallpaper & style > Icons. The update provides options beyond the standard circular icons, including rounded squares and others. Themed icons are generated for every app, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the home screen.

Additional Functionalities

The Pixel Launcher has received a subtle update, featuring larger icons for microphone, Lens, and AI Mode, along with more vibrant Dynamic Colour. Live Caption is now conveniently accessible from the bottom of the volume slider, making it easier for users to enable this feature without navigating to the full panel.

Moreover, the Settings app has been improved with more expressive styling, including a revamped Notification history page displaying full-size app icons in a new card layout. Parental controls have been separated from Digital Wellbeing, streamlining access to tools for managing screen time and app usage.

Display and Accessibility Improvements

The update includes an Enhanced HDR brightness option, allowing users to adjust brightness intensity from dim to bright, and an expanded dark theme that applies dark mode to most apps that do not support it natively. Health Connect can now directly record step data tracked by the device, enhancing fitness tracking capabilities.

Installation Instructions

To install the Android 16 QPR2 update, users should go to Settings > System > System update and tap 'Check for update' if they have not yet received the over-the-air (OTA) update. Users currently on the Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.3 will receive a minor patch to transition to the final release. The Android Beta Program will continue to test future builds and feature drops.

Google's commitment to providing more frequent updates represents a shift from their previous strategy, aiming to enhance user experience with timely access to the latest features and improvements. As stated by the company, this initiative marks 'a new chapter for how Android updates work.'
