Google Enhances Generative User Interface for AI Overviews
In a recent announcement, Google revealed the expansion of its generative user interface (UI) to the AI Overviews feature, which allows for custom visual layouts and interactive tools tailored to user queries. Previously, this functionality was limited to AI Mode. This update was highlighted in Google's back-to-school announcement on Wednesday.
The generative UI produces custom visuals and may include interactive elements when the system deems it useful. For example, a search for the 'pH scale' could provide an interactive visual representation, while follow-up questions could refine this output, such as plotting specific fruits on the same scale.
Google has demonstrated the generative UI's capability through practical applications, including a mortgage calculator designed to assist users in comparing loan terms. This feature is now available globally in English within AI Mode and is being rolled out to AI Overviews, with full global access anticipated in the coming weeks.
The generative UI was first introduced in AI Mode in November 2025 alongside the Gemini 3 model. Although Google provided broader access to Gemini 3 Pro features for Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., the generative UI does not require a subscription. At the Google I/O event in 2026, the company stated that the generative UI would be made generally available in Search, free of charge. This latest announcement represents a significant step in providing users with enhanced resources, particularly useful for educational purposes.
Alongside the generative UI rollout, Google is introducing new study tools, such as practice quizzes and Lens coaching, which begin in AI Overviews and continue in AI Mode. This move is part of a broader initiative to leverage AI technology for educational support. Google indicated that applications that focus on calculators, converters, or comparison tools may benefit directly as the generative UI becomes progressively available.
The company has not disclosed specific types of queries that will activate the generative UI during this expansion. However, users can expect the tool to assist in various academic tasks.
As Google continues to refine its AI capabilities, the generative UI stands as a testament to the company's commitment to enhancing user interactions with its search functionalities. Further details regarding the progressive rollout will be revealed in due course, ensuring that users can maximise their experience with these innovative tools.
