Google Enhances Generative User Interface for AI Overviews

In a recent announcement, Google revealed the expansion of its generative user interface (UI) to the AI Overviews feature, which allows for custom visual layouts and interactive tools tailored to user queries. Previously, this functionality was limited to AI Mode. This update was highlighted in Google's back-to-school announcement on Wednesday.

The generative UI produces custom visuals and may include interactive elements when the system deems it useful. This feature is now available globally in English within AI Mode and is being rolled out to AI Overviews, with full global access anticipated in the coming weeks.

The generative UI was first introduced in AI Mode in November 2025 alongside the Gemini 3 model. Although Google provided broader access to Gemini 3 Pro features for Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., the generative UI does not require a subscription. At the Google I/O event in 2026, the company stated that the generative UI would be made generally available in Search, free of charge. Alongside the generative UI rollout, Google is introducing new study tools, such as practice quizzes and Lens coaching, which begin in AI Overviews and continue in AI Mode.
