Gold Price Predictions for October: Market Outlook Amid Inflation
Analysis of gold and silver prices as inflation pressures mount; insights on market trends and investment strategies for October 2026.

Gold and silver prices face renewed pressure as rising inflationary indicators destabilise the market. Recent reports highlight that gold exchange-traded fund (ETF) demand has risen to year-to-date highs, bucking the overall downward trend in prices driven by economic factors.

Market analysts at Heraeus noted that gold prices experienced volatility, briefly dropping below $4,100 per ounce following the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) data last week. The initial market reaction was characterised by increasing Treasury yields and a stronger US dollar, fuelling speculation around possible interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve.

Despite these challenges, gold ETF holdings reached a peak of 101.3 million ounces on 8 October, representing a significant increase of 5.3% from the low of 96.2 million ounces recorded in July. This marks an uptick of approximately 2% compared to the beginning of the year. Notably, while gold prices have fluctuated between $4,100 and $4,200 per ounce, ETF holdings have managed to stabilise, indicating sustained investor interest.

"For much of 2026, changes in ETF holdings have broadly mirrored gold price movements, but recent divergences suggest that investors anticipate a potential rally," the analysts explained, indicating that investor behaviour tends to lag behind market dynamics.

The geographical distribution of ETF investments has broadened, with Asian-listed funds accounting for nearly half of the increase in global holdings. In contrast, US-listed funds contributed around 30% and European funds 20%.

In another development affecting the market, the central bank of Kazakhstan, which had been a significant sovereign buyer of gold earlier in the year, plans to reduce its gold holdings. The National Bank of Kazakhstan aims to lower the precious metal's share of its international reserves from approximately 78% to 75% by the end of the year. The bank had previously accumulated around 386 tonnes and was reported as the world’s fourth-largest central-bank buyer in 2026.

While the reduction in gold holdings might seem significant, analysts have suggested it is primarily a portfolio rebalancing measure rather than a reflection of declining central bank demand for gold overall. Current valuations mean that a 3% reduction would amount to roughly 15 tonnes, but actual sales will depend on prevailing market prices and strategic financial decisions.

As trading continued, spot gold was observed at around $4,151.80 per ounce, reflecting a slight decline of 0.33% on the daily chart. Simultaneously, silver also faced downward pressure following the inflation reports, with prices falling through critical support levels. Analysts reported that silver has struggled to maintain support around $60 per ounce, briefly approaching lows seen in July and later stabilising above $57 per ounce.

Additionally, the Indian government's evolving import tax regulations for precious metals, which impose a 3% Integrated Goods and Services Tax on gold, silver, and platinum, continue to influence market dynamics. The government stated that exemptions previously granted to banks and nominated agencies will not extend beyond 31 March, bringing all import channels under the same tax framework. While this tax has been operational since April, its effect on market mechanisms primarily concerns working capital management rather than final pricing for consumers.

India’s silver imports reached an impressive 232 million ounces in 2025, accounting for approximately 20% of global demand. As market participants navigate these complexities, both gold and silver prices remain sensitive to shifts in economic indicators and geopolitical developments.
