Global Market Recovery Boosts Indian Stock Indices
Indian stock markets rebounded on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following robust performance by global peers and a temporary easing of hostilities between Israel and Iran. This recovery came a day after significant losses were experienced across major indices.
The benchmark BSE Sensex increased by 394.50 points, or 0.54%, closing at 73,918.76. During intraday trading, it had surged by as much as 511.15 points, reaching 74,035.41. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 finished the day 119.10 points, or 0.52%, higher at 23,242.10, having climbed 156.4 points at its peak.
Among the top performers on the Sensex, InterGlobe Aviation, State Bank of India, and ICICI Bank were notable gainers. Conversely, Titan and Tech Mahindra struggled, finishing in the red.
The improvement in market sentiment was further supported by a decrease in oil prices. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell by 1.66% to $92.69 per barrel.
Asian markets reflected a similar recovery. South Korea's Kospi surged by 8.18%, Japan's Nikkei 225 increased by 2.17%, and the Shanghai Composite index rose by 1.28%. However, the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong concluded on a lower note.
In Europe, markets were also trading positively, suggesting broader confidence among investors. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, noted, "Domestic markets are witnessing a mild recovery after the recent sharp decline, supported by a pause in Iran-Israel tensions and softer crude prices. However, sentiment remains fragile."
The trading day came after a challenging Monday, June 8, when the Sensex had dropped substantially, closing down 719.08 points, or 0.97%, at 73,524.26. Similarly, the Nifty fell by 243.70 points, or 1.04%, settling at 23,123.
The improved outlook in global markets was attributed to easing geopolitical risks, a drop in oil prices, and renewed optimism in the technology and artificial intelligence sectors. Ponmudi R., CEO of Enrich Money, remarked on the influence of international factors on Indian markets, stating, "Easing tensions between Israel and Iran helped improve investor sentiment and drive a recovery in risk assets."
Despite the uplift in the markets, recent foreign institutional flows were concerning, with Foreign Institutional Investors selling equities worth ₹5,555.67 crore on Monday, signalling cautious investor behaviour amid fluctuating global macroeconomic conditions.
