France Suspends Stun Grenade Use Amid Student Protest Outcry
France has announced a temporary suspension of stun grenades in response to increasing scrutiny over police actions at student protests. This decision follows a serious incident involving a 15-year-old who suffered a severe injury during demonstrations. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the halt on Wednesday, stating that it would remain in effect until the circumstances of the recent incidents have been thoroughly reviewed. The announcement came as hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, and supporters rallied across France to demand improved funding for education and better conditions in high schools.
The protests began in late September, with students blocking school entrances to express frustration over dilapidated facilities, teacher shortages, and a lack of resources. Demonstrators gathered en masse in cities including Paris, where tensions escalated and resulted in clashes between police and protesters. On Tuesday, both supporters and students took to the streets, with estimated numbers ranging between 250,000 and 450,000 participants, as per various student unions.
Amidst the protests, allegations of police misconduct have surged, leading to 18 investigations into officer actions. The interior ministry reported that over 6,100 arrests have been made since the protests began, with about 85% of those detained being minors. Additionally, more than 700 police officers and approximately 200 students have sustained injuries during the unrest. Nunez acknowledged the disproportionate use of force against minors, with rights groups citing alarming incidents where tear gas and rubber bullets were deployed.
In a related statement, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu reiterated that the government is committed to addressing the students' concerns. He condemned the violence that had marred some demonstrations and clarified that police were not acting under orders to confront demonstrators aggressively. Lecornu will also reveal a set of proposals aimed at educational reform later this month, which he believes aims to alleviate student grievances.
Despite the government's assurances, many students and their supporters feel that their voices have been ignored. Interviews with demonstrators highlighted feelings of frustration and a sense of powerlessness. Theo, a 19-year-old student, expressed solidarity with high school protesters, stating, “We’re really short of resources. Macron’s government needs to stop investing only in war.” Other students echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of adequate funding and resources in education.
In response to the protests and the controversies surrounding police actions, President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency meeting with key ministers to discuss the spiralling situation. The Ministry of the Interior indicated that ongoing blockades and protests against educational inadequacies would require significant reforms to ensure a constructive dialogue between students and the government moving forward. Nunez also urged calm from police officers amidst a charged environment, stating that restraint must be a priority.
The student protests are part of a broader tradition in France, where public demonstrations frequently serve as a means to voice concerns on pressing social issues. A fourth protest is planned for later this week, indicating that the movement continues to gain momentum as students insist on being heard. 'We came to defend our youth,' noted Raphael, a 17-year-old protester, reflecting the collective determination of students to share their message.
Given the ongoing unrest, the French government faces a challenge in reconciling public safety with the rights of students to express their concerns. With continued demonstrations expected, the response to these evolving dynamics will be closely scrutinised by both the public and human rights organisations.
