France's Student Protests Escalate into Nationwide Unrest
France faces widespread protests as high-school students demand better educational conditions, sparking violence and government responses.

Protests by high-school students across France have escalated dramatically, resulting in violence and disruptions to the education system. Approximately 900 demonstrations, blockades, and related incidents have been reported outside high schools nationwide as students voice frustrations over long hours, inadequate teaching staff, and deteriorating facilities.

The unrest, which originated in the Paris region last week, has prompted a swift government response, including a crisis cabinet meeting called by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. His office indicated that the surge in violence has made it challenging to maintain public education continuity, putting both educators and students at risk.

The education minister, Édouard Geffray, is scheduled to meet with student representatives to discuss their grievances. A significant number of public institutions have been affected, with over 160 schools closing due to protest-related incidents and access blocked to around 30 university campuses, including notable locations in Paris and Marseille.

According to the French interior ministry, nearly 3,000 students aged 15 to 18 have been detained since the protests began, with almost 2,000 arrests occurring in a single day. Reports indicate that more than 300 individuals, including police and firefighters, have sustained injuries during these encounters.

The students have raised concerns regarding overcrowded classrooms, insufficient teacher availability, and extreme temperatures within school environments. Riot police have been deployed to manage escalating tensions, and instances of violence, including the use of objects against police, have been documented. Furthermore, an internal police investigation is underway following allegations of excessive force against students during the protests.

Destructive acts have included the setting of rubbish bins on fire outside schools and arson attempts within buildings. In Nantes, severe fire damage has resulted in a school being closed for a month. Various cities have reported incidents of violence, with some students expressing discontent with the methods adopted by their peers. “I wish those setting bins on fire would protest ‘with words,’” said 16-year-old Maelle from Caen.

In response to the unrest, public transport services, such as trams in Strasbourg, have been temporarily halted to mitigate protest activities. Students have described dire school conditions, citing issues like water leaks and overcrowded facilities, with one student noting, “There are 35 of us per classroom, and there aren’t enough toilets.”

The government, while acknowledging the validity of the students' concerns, has condemned the violence. The radical left La France Insoumise (LFI) party has been accused of inciting unrest, although LFI representatives have professed support for peaceful protest methods. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a prominent figure in LFI, has expressed concern over police violence against students, calling for a focus on dialogue rather than confrontation.

The series of incidents marks a significant shift from peaceful demonstrations to a national crisis, prompting urgent discussions among government officials on how to address the underlying issues while restoring safety across the educational landscape.
