France Deploys Military to Support Police Amid Ongoing Protests
France is mobilising military forces to assist police ahead of proposed national protests following recent violence and unrest.

France's government has announced plans to deploy troops from its counterterrorism military units to assist police and gendarmes in response to recent protests. The announcement comes ahead of anticipated demonstrations scheduled for October 24, following widespread violence that erupted during protests on October 17. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez made this announcement during a session in the National Assembly, acknowledging previous shortcomings in dealing with the unrest.

Nunez stated that the soldiers would primarily be stationed in static locations to bolster security, allowing police and gendarmes to focus on mobile operations. He noted that recent police deployments had been inadequate in terms of mobility and response.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu indicated that restoring order is an immediate priority. After significant rioting and looting across cities such as Paris, Marseille, and Lyon, authorities aim to reestablish control in areas affected by disorder. "The deployment next Saturday will be massive," Lecornu said.

The demonstrations on October 17 saw massive participation, with the government estimating around 550,000 attendees, while organisers reported figures closer to 800,000. The protests were marked by illegal activities, including looting, resulting in the vandalism of approximately 3,000 businesses nationwide. Activists have called for additional demonstrations on October 24, and some unions have announced plans for protests on November 5.

In response to the violence, a parliamentary commission is being established to investigate the underlying causes of the unrest, with 200 investigators assigned to identify individuals involved in the riots. Authorities have arrested individuals connected to the violence, including one suspected of inciting a fire that severely damaged a historical town hall in Limoges.

Following a series of disturbances leading to curfews imposed in various regions, the government reported a night of relative calm, attributing it to the recent measures. The curfews, which have been extended, affect minors and are intended to help restore public order.

This mobilisation of military forces marks a significant escalation in France's approach to managing the unrest and highlights the challenges the government faces in maintaining control amid a climate of heightened tension, exacerbated by the upcoming electoral season. The crisis has sparked a wide array of political responses, fueling debates on security and civil liberties as the country prepares for further potential unrest.
