France Conducts Test Launch of New Nuclear-Capable Missile
France has successfully carried out a test launch of a new strategic ballistic missile from a submarine, although the missile was not armed with a nuclear warhead. The launch occurred on Tuesday off the coast of Finistere, a region in western France. This was reported by French media outlets, including BFM TV, which cited the French Ministry of Armed Forces.
The missile was launched from the nuclear-powered submarine Le Vigilant and successfully landed in the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately several hundred kilometres from the nearest coast. According to officials, the test was performed to affirm France’s commitment to international agreements regarding nuclear arms.
French President Emmanuel Macron was present to observe the test firing, which took place from a French Navy frigate. The M51.3 missile, which has been in service since October 2025, is deployed on France's four nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. At least one of these submarines is continuously stationed at sea around the world to ensure that France maintains its capability to launch a nuclear strike at any time.
The French Ministry of Armed Forces has reiterated that this missile test was executed without a nuclear warhead and was strictly aligned with France's international obligations concerning nuclear proliferation. This recent test aims to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of France's strategic nuclear deterrent capabilities while maintaining transparency in military operations.
The development and deployment of the M51.3 missile are part of France's ongoing efforts to modernise its nuclear forces, a point significantly highlighted during the test launch. The presence of President Macron at the launch underscores the importance of maintaining a robust defence posture in an evolving global security landscape. The display of military capabilities also serves to reinforce France’s position within NATO and its commitments to allied security, particularly in light of current geopolitical tensions.
