Former Chief Minister Criticises Indore Officials After Water Tragedy

Bhopal: A tragic incident involving contaminated water in Indore has led to the deaths of ten individuals, prompting strong criticism from former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti. In a statement on social media platform X, Bharti expressed her dismay, stating that the event has brought shame to the state, its government, and the entire administrative system.

Bharti labelled the incident a 'maha-paap' or 'great sin', and called for 'prayaschit', which translates to atonement. She urged the government to apologise to the families affected by the tragedy and to ensure that those responsible face stringent consequences.

The former chief minister highlighted the stark contrast between Indore's reputation as a city renowned for cleanliness and the current crisis. "The city, which has been celebrated for its cleanliness, is now exposed for its ugliness, filth, and poisoned water that has claimed so many lives, with the death toll potentially rising further," she remarked.

Bharti also questioned the adequacy of the compensation offered to the bereaved families, stating that the price of a life cannot simply be quantified as Rs 2 lakh (£2,000), as families endure lifelong grief. She further commented, "Yeh Mohan Yadavji ki pariksha ki ghadi hai," translating to 'This is a testing time for Mohan Yadavji,' referring to the current Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav.

In her criticism, Bharti specifically targeted Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava, challenging his claim that civic officials do not heed his directives. "Who is it saying that he couldn't have his way in the contaminated water case? If you cannot enact change, why are you occupying that position, and why do you consume packaged drinking water?" she questioned.

The incident has raised significant concerns about public health and safety in Indore, a city previously recognised for its cleanliness and sanitation initiatives. Authorities are under increasing pressure to address the underlying issues that led to this tragedy and to implement effective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The situation remains fluid as investigations continue, and there is a growing demand for accountability from both local and state officials.
