Essel Group's Subhash Chandra Faces CBI Investigation for Loan Fraud
Central Bureau of Investigation investigates Subhash Chandra of Essel Group for allegedly inflating net worth to secure loans from LIC.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a case against Subhash Chandra, the Chairman of Essel Group, along with three associates on allegations of defrauding LIC Housing Finance Ltd (LICHFL) of over ₹1,322 crore between 2018 and 2026. The case stems from a complaint lodged by LICHFL, which claims Chandra submitted a 'net worth certificate' asserting his net worth was ₹59,113 crore in 2018, enabling him to secure loans for Vasant Sagar Properties Pvt Ltd and other related entities.

LICHFL accuses Subhash Chandra of deceit, transitioning from a declaration of significant net worth in loan documents to reporting a drastically lower net worth in insolvency proceedings. In these later declarations, he stated that his net worth was never around ₹50,000 crore. Furthermore, in recent proceedings, he reported his financial standing as merely ₹31.79 crore for the year 2024, and noted that even in 2017-18, it was not above ₹40,000 crore.

The query into Chandra's finances raises concerns not only regarding his credibility but also about the loans extended by LICHFL, which facilitated credit based on his inflated net worth. Pankaj Suroliya, Amish Pandya, and Rajeev Dholakia have also been named in the CBI's case. They are purportedly involved in the alleged fraudulent activities linked to Chandra’s claims.

Chandra, who previously served as a member of the Rajya Sabha representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, is currently embroiled in numerous legal struggles. His case has drawn significant attention, particularly following an earlier ruling by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). In that instance, a single member of the tribunal accepted Chandra’s plea to settle his personal guarantees related to loans taken by his corporate group for just ₹6.5 crore, despite the total admitted liabilities exceeding ₹22,000 crore. This decision sparked substantial backlash, prompting calls for a five-member bench to reconsider his case.

In light of the ongoing investigation and legal issues, the fate of Subhash Chandra and the outcomes of these allegations remain under close scrutiny. The CBI's actions signal a serious approach to addressing financial misconduct and protecting the integrity of financial institutions in India. As the investigation progresses, further details could shed light on the extent of these allegations and the potential repercussions for Chandra and his associates.
