Elon Musk Promises Affordable Starlink Amid Rivalry with Reliance Jio
Elon Musk vows to make Starlink affordable in India, intensifying competition with Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio ahead of a major IPO.

Elon Musk has recently pledged to price his Starlink satellite internet service affordably in India, a move aimed at competing with Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio. This announcement comes just days before Jio's parent company is set to launch the largest initial public offering (IPO) in India, targeting a valuation of $106 billion.

Jio Platforms, which includes the telecom arm, is also awaiting final security approvals needed to roll out its satellite internet venture. Musk's approach mirrors tactics he used in markets like Kenya, where he introduced disruptive pricing to challenge local telecom operators.

In a post on his social media platform X, Musk acknowledged that if Starlink's pricing were excessive for Indian consumers, it would hinder sales. He stated, "Obviously, if Starlink is too expensive in India, no one will buy it, so SpaceX will need to make pricing affordable". Furthermore, Musk argued that increased competition could benefit the general public by providing more options, despite potentially reducing Ambani's profits.

Musk's comments are part of an ongoing series of posts criticising the Indian government and Ambani for allegedly delaying Starlink's entry into the market to favour Jio. Historically, Musk maintained a positive relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the dynamics appear to be shifting as Musk publicly addresses concerns over governmental support for Jio.

India’s government has unequivocally denied any preferential treatment regarding approvals for satellite ventures, indicating that all three entities—including Starlink and Jio—are currently awaiting necessary clearances. In a recent post, Musk referred to Ambani as "Prime Minister Ambani" and suggested that he should allow Starlink to compete in the Indian market.

As of now, there has been no official response from Reliance concerning Musk's allegations or proposals. The developments come at a critical juncture for both companies as they vie for dominance in one of the largest internet markets globally.
