Elina Svitolina and Gaël Monfils End Marriage Amid Ukraine War Struggles
Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina announces her divorce from Gaël Monfils, highlighting the emotional toll of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has revealed she has separated from her husband, former French tennis player Gaël Monfils, due to the emotional strain caused by the war in Ukraine. The 32-year-old, currently ranked sixth in the world, shared her feelings on social media, describing the impact of the conflict on her mental well-being.

In her Instagram post, Svitolina expressed, "This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to share," emphasising her need to reconnect with herself. She indicated that her journey to self-discovery could not occur within the confines of her marriage.

Svitolina praised Monfils, who is 40 years old, for his understanding and respect during this challenging time. She noted, "Some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you," further reflecting on the intensity of her personal struggles.

The athlete mentioned her love for Ukraine, a country she has proudly represented, and spoke about the toll the war has taken on her experience. Coming from Odesa, a city that has faced significant destruction during the ongoing conflict, Svitolina has been vocal about the emotional challenges she has encountered throughout this period.

She stated, "What you didn't see were the sleepless nights, the doubts, and the feeling of slowly losing myself." Her message was poignant, focusing on the significance of her daughter Skai, aged four, asserting, "Our marriage is ending, but our family is not."

Elina Svitolina and Gaël Monfils, who married in 2021, have garnered attention as a prominent sports couple. Monfils, once ranked sixth in the world, is preparing for what is expected to be the final tournament of his professional career at the upcoming Paris Masters. However, it was reported last week that he was included on a list of retired players by the International Tennis Integrity Authority, suggesting that he has formally exited from professional tennis.

Post-retirement, Monfils is set to embark on a new journey in the finance sector after joining a wealth management firm in Switzerland. Amid the personal changes, the former tennis star has also made headlines for his competitive legacy, having secured 13 titles on the ATP Tour throughout his career.

Both players have navigated their careers against the backdrop of a challenging national crisis, contributing to their individual narratives and public personas. As they continue their lives apart, Svitolina's focus remains on her daughter and efforts to manage her emotional health during such tumultuous times.
