Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Raises Concerns Amid WHO Chief's Visit
The spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo is worsening, with over 1,000 suspected cases. WHO Chief visits to discuss containment efforts.

The situation surrounding the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has become increasingly alarming, according to the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Two weeks after the outbreak was officially declared, Dr Alan Gonzales, Deputy Director of MSF, stated that the number of cases recorded is unprecedented in a short timeframe.

Currently, there are over 1,000 suspected cases of Ebola in DR Congo, with at least 246 fatalities reported. The neighbouring country of Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death. Dr Gonzales expressed concern, saying, "Never before has an Ebola outbreak recorded so many cases so soon after its declaration." He highlighted that the response efforts are struggling to keep pace with the rapid spread of the virus.

Dr Gonzales also noted that hundreds of samples from suspected cases remain untested, underscoring that the true scale of the outbreak is still unknown. He attributed challenges in containment efforts to significant obstacles, including border and airport closures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has pointed out that ongoing conflict in the DR Congo is further hindering response measures. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, arrived in Ituri Province, identified as the hardest-hit area, to oversee efforts aimed at containing the outbreak. He emphasised the importance of community involvement, stating that local residents "understand the problems better and they know the solution as well."

While acknowledging the need to honour deceased loved ones, Dr Tedros cautioned against traditional practices that could facilitate the spread of the virus. He warned that certain customs, such as touching the bodies of Ebola victims, present a severe health risk.

In the provincial capital of Bunia, daily life appears relatively unchanged, with residents continuing normal activities. However, public health measures are being implemented. Passengers arriving at the airport are required to wash their hands, and health advisories are prominently displayed and broadcast in both local languages and French.

Dr Tedros' initial visit included a stop at the National Institute for Biomedical Research laboratory in Bunia, where samples from suspected Ebola patients are tested. Local health officials have reported that results can now be returned within 24 hours, which aids in rapid identification and treatment of infections. Previously, samples had to be transported over 1,500 kilometres to Kinshasa, the capital, resulting in delays that could lead to more cases and fatalities.

The current outbreak is linked to a rare strain of Ebola, known as Bundibugyo, which lacks a proven vaccine and has a mortality rate of about one-third. Ebola viruses typically infect animals such as fruit bats, and outbreaks among humans may begin when infected animals are consumed or handled. The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person, including blood and saliva, and can also be transmitted via contaminated objects.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, as containment efforts face numerous challenges amid the ongoing crisis in the affected regions. There is a pressing need for further assistance and resources to tackle this public health emergency.
