DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Becomes Deadliest in Recorded History
The Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ebola outbreak has claimed 2,325 lives, becoming the deadliest recorded outbreak in the country.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has escalated into the deadliest in the nation's history, surpassing previous records with a death toll of 2,325. The latest report from the DRC's National Public Health Institute indicates that a total of 4,945 individuals have been confirmed infected, with 101 new cases documented within the last 24 hours.

Tom Fletcher, the United Nations humanitarian chief, emphasised the urgent need for 'speed, scale, and solidarity' in combating the virus. He highlighted the rapid progression of the outbreak, remarking that it is 'the fastest growing on record'. He added, 'Ebola is winning in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We cannot let the virus outrun our response.'

Declared on May 15, this outbreak marks the DRC's 17th instance of Ebola, and it is already the largest in terms of case numbers, a benchmark reached by late July. The current death toll has overtaken the previous most severe outbreak in 2018-2020, which recorded 2,299 fatalities.

The World Health Organization's Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that if the outbreak continues at its current rate, it could surpass the magnitude of the West African Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016, which claimed over 11,000 lives and led to significant advancements in vaccine development.

This outbreak has been linked to the Bundibugyo species of the Ebola virus, which poses challenges due to the absence of approved vaccines or treatments. Compounding the crisis are factors like a weakened health infrastructure, geographical remoteness, and ongoing conflicts near borders with South Sudan, Uganda, and Rwanda, all of which have impeded effective response efforts.

According to government statistics, the case fatality ratio has sharply increased from about 20% in early June to a staggering 46%. This means that nearly half of those confirmed with the virus are succumbing to the illness. Thomas Parisch, a public health specialist with Doctors Without Borders, noted that typically, as outbreaks progress, the case fatality ratio should decline due to improved contact tracing and earlier patient identification. However, the opposite trend is occurring, with many cases being identified too late, limiting the effectiveness of treatment.

In response to the crisis, a small number of experimental vaccines and therapies are currently being evaluated, while health authorities are assessing the potential for existing treatments to provide some level of protection against the virus. However, evidence to support these methods remains largely confined to animal studies, leaving significant uncertainty in their efficacy for human subjects.
