Dinesh Sharma Appointed Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Dinesh Sharma, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The announcement was made by Rashtrapati Bhavan in a statement issued late on Saturday. Sharma, who is 62 years old, takes over from Admiral D K Joshi, who has held the position since October 8, 2017.

In his first remarks following the appointment, Sharma expressed gratitude towards President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, along with the BJP's leadership. He conveyed his appreciation on the social media platform X, stating, "Hon'ble President, Hon'ble Prime Minister, Hon'ble Home Minister, and the party's central leadership - my heartfelt thanks." He further emphasised that his new role is not just a position but a commitment to serve the Constitution and the public. "I pledge to fulfil this duty with complete devotion, honesty, and dedication," Sharma added.

Sharma's appointment comes as he is nearing the conclusion of his term in the Rajya Sabha, which is set to end on November 25. This transition is also seen as a strategic move within the BJP, which may allow the party to introduce new members into the Upper House. Political analysts suggest that this could lead to a wider reshuffle of positions within the governors and lieutenant governors across various Indian states, especially considering several states are heading towards assembly elections.

The BJP has not yet confirmed who might fill the vacancy left by Sharma in the Rajya Sabha, but there is speculation that it may open the door for another leader to enter Parliament. Current reports indicate that the appointments of new governors are expected soon, particularly in states where elections are anticipated, including Uttar Pradesh.
