Dharmendra Pradhan Responds to Resignation Calls Amid Protests

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has largely refrained from responding directly to the ongoing demands for his resignation from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) amidst escalating protests, particularly following police actions during a march on Parliament on 20 July. Instead, Pradhan has primarily focused on sharing posts reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitments to reform the examination system, aiming to prevent future leaks.

Over the past week, Pradhan showcased a meeting with 15 fellow Members of Parliament (MPs) from his home state of Odisha, a meeting that took place on 22 July. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds 20 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, although Pradhan had been previously seen as a potential chief ministerial candidate. Currently, he serves in the central government, with Mohan Charan Majhi as the party’s choice for Odisha in the 2024 elections.

Pradhan’s meeting coincided with the ongoing disruptions in Parliament, where opposition parties have demanded that issues such as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak be addressed. In his post on social media platform X, he mentioned that the gathering was focused on developmental matters, specifically emphasizing the need for special assistance for children affected by learning disabilities. Some observers interpreted this meeting as a demonstration of strength amid rising calls for his resignation.

On the same day, Pradhan participated in a conclave involving education ministers from various states and union territories, where, notably, he did not address the issue of examination leaks in his lengthy speech. During this public appearance, which was streamed live on X, he discussed topics including the significance of native languages and the National Education Policy (NEP), along with other policy-related matters.

In an earlier post, Pradhan indirectly referred to the issues concerning the paper leaks, framing them as a political attack. He accused Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of exploiting students for political gain and claimed that the opposition's protests were causing public inconvenience. He stated, “Our Government remains 100% committed to discussing NEET and addressing every genuine concern on the floor of the House.”

Historically, Pradhan has not held back from making critical statements about the opposition. Last month, he labelled the protesters as a “B-team of terrorists” in a television interview. On the day of the CJP’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, he shared a post from Prime Minister Modi, which included a sarcastic remark about Rahul Gandhi.

Following Prime Minister Modi's direct communications regarding the paper leak issue, Pradhan promptly shared these updates, reinforcing the government’s commitment to student welfare. On 23 July, Modi promised the establishment of fast-track courts to address the issue of paper leaks decisively.

As recent developments continue to unfold, Pradhan’s ongoing activity on social media reflects his strategy to engage with pressing educational issues while countering the demands for his resignation. On 24 July, he also extended greetings for festivals and expressed condolences for the death of a prominent freedom fighter from Odisha.

Pradhan, currently representing the Sambalpur constituency in the Lok Sabha, has a considerable political background, being the son of former Union minister Debendra Pradhan. He earned a master’s degree in anthropology from Utkal University and began his political journey as a student activist associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
