Dengue Cases Surge in Bangladesh with Record Hospitalisations

The dengue outbreak in Bangladesh has reached alarming levels, with at least four fatalities and 1,558 hospitalisations reported within a 24-hour period. This new figure marks the highest daily admissions for dengue cases in the nation's history, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Three of the latest deaths occurred within the Dhaka South City Corporation, while one was reported from elsewhere in Dhaka Division. The rising infections have contributed to a cumulative total of 42,590 cases this year, with 117 deaths recorded thus far. Currently, 2,995 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country.

These latest figures highlight the urgent need for enhanced public health measures as the country grapples with the complexities of dengue transmission, which is influenced by factors such as environmental conditions, urbanisation, and public awareness.

Dr S M Ziauddin Hyder, Special Assistant on Health Affairs to the Prime Minister, has emphasised that tackling dengue requires a coordinated approach that involves multiple sectors. Efforts are underway to ensure proper sanitation and awareness are prioritised in schools and communities. This includes maintaining clean environments in hospitals and establishing specific areas for dengue care.

Community actions are being mobilised alongside training programmes for health workers to improve case management. Local government authorities are also focusing on vector control strategies in their ongoing response.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for a collective effort, stating that all sectors must engage in reducing mosquito-breeding sites and enhancing surveillance systems. Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed, WHO Representative to Bangladesh, reiterated that effective dengue management is crucial to protecting public health and preventing further fatalities.

As the situation develops, public health officials continue to urge communities to remain vigilant, fostering a collaborative atmosphere to mitigate the impact of this health crisis on the population.
