Delhi Prepares for Major Protests with Heavy Security Deployment
Delhi has heightened its security measures ahead of a significant demonstration orchestrated by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which is advocating for electoral reforms and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest is scheduled for Saturday, garnering considerable attention from the media and political analysts alike.
In response to the anticipated gathering, law enforcement has convened an impressive deployment of over 35,000 officers in the capital. This decision follows CJP's statement regarding their determination to proceed with the protests despite the denial of official permissions.
The demonstration will occur at Jantar Mantar, a well-known protest site, which has seen considerable turmoil in the lead-up to the event. All access routes to Jantar Mantar have been barricaded, and authorities have shut down several metro stations in an effort to limit the movement of potential protesters into the area. Additionally, numerous train services to Delhi have been cancelled as a precautionary measure.
Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the CJP, has expressed unwavering commitment to the protest, stating, "If you want to jail us or even shoot us we are prepared," clearly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his remarks on social media. This movement follows a prior successful campaign by the CJP that resulted in the resignation of the Education Minister following widespread protests earlier this year.
The CJP's call for mass mobilisation has been amplified by support from various opposition parties, farmer groups, and student organisations, which have recently held their own demonstrations in the capital. These factions are united in their disapproval of the recent updates to the electoral rolls implemented under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which has allegedly led to the removal of millions of eligible voters.
The Election Commission, while defending the updates, has stated that the intention is to eliminate duplicate and ineligible names from the voter's list. However, this justification has not quelled concerns that the revisions may be biased in favour of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both the BJP and the Election Commission have vehemently denied these allegations.
Police officials have justified their decision to deny protest permissions by citing a lack of adequate notice, claiming that previous requests from the CJP have not adhered to standard protocol. Nupur Prasad, a police official, emphasised that applications need to be submitted at least ten days before the planned event. She pointed out that past compliance issues have further complicated the situation concerning public safety and law enforcement.
The escalating tension in Delhi follows a dramatic series of protests earlier this week, which involved confrontations between police and opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, leading to viral footage of police actions. As the Saturday protests draw near, authorities are issuing warnings to the public urging them to stay clear of the planned demonstrations in anticipation of disturbances.
As both sides prepare for Saturday, the situation remains fluid, reflecting growing political and social divides in the country.
