Delhi Police Prepares for CJP Protest at India Gate

The Delhi Police are preparing for a proposed protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) set for September 5. As per reports, the group has announced a peaceful march from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters, raising concerns about unfulfilled commitments made by the government to NEET aspirants who had previously protested at Jantar Mantar last month. This planned march, spanning approximately 2.5 kilometres, aims to involve families of NEET candidates who have died by suicide, as well as victims of alleged police brutality. Participating students and youth organisations from across India have been invited to join the event.

While the protest has been announced, police officials confirmed that no formal request for permission has been received from CJP as of now. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma noted that prohibitory orders, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, are currently in effect for the New Delhi district, which restricts protests to designated areas like Jantar Mantar with prior approval. Sharma stated, “The department has not received any request for any march or protest.”

An anonymous police officer indicated, “There is absolutely no possibility that this protest is legal. India Gate is not a designated site and also huge crowds there will lead to major law and order as well as traffic violations.” Meanwhile, police forces have commenced planning to ensure that the protest does not take place at India Gate. They are reportedly devising strategies to prevent any gatherings that could lead to disorderly conduct or traffic congestion.

Delhi Police’s senior officers convened on Tuesday to evaluate the situation and maintain order in light of the upcoming march. Authorities mentioned that they might advocate for an alternative venue, such as Ramleela Maidan, depending on the anticipated number of participants.

Intelligence efforts by police have also included monitoring social media activity related to the protest and gathering information on its leaders and organisers. An officer stated, “If CJP does not approach us, we will reach out to them.” Plans are in place to ensure a robust presence of security personnel, including special forces, in anticipation of a possibly large turnout.

As of now, the police have retained units from the Central Reserve Police Force and may involve the Indo-Tibetan Border Police should the crowd exceed expectations. This proactive approach stems from ongoing assessments made in recent meetings to properly address any disruptions that may arise during the protest period. As tensions build regarding the potential unrest at a highly symbolic location like India Gate, police are taking all necessary measures to uphold public safety and security during the sensitive time ahead of the march.
