Delhi Police ACP Manasvi Vashishta Suspended After Protest
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Manasvi Vashishta has been suspended after leading a protest outside the Delhi Police headquarters on Monday. The demonstration involved numerous police officers, including Vashishta, who gathered to seek an audience with Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar regarding a previous encounter with lawyers in Shahdara, East Delhi.
The controversy began after Vashishta and Arun Kumar, the station house officer of Shahdara police station, were transferred in connection with allegations made by local lawyers. These lawyers have initiated an indefinite strike, claiming that both the ACP and the station house officer threatened them during a visit to file a complaint related to an assault against lawyer Lalit Bansal.
During the protest, ACP Vashishta articulated the intention behind their demonstration, stating, "Our demands are clear. We need to meet CP sir. There needs to be a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to deal with such matters. If this happens to us, how will we fight to save the people of the city?" He made this statement amid chants of support from fellow officers, including calls for police unity and national pride.
The police personnel's action highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement and the legal community in Delhi. The lawyers began their strike last week over what they perceived as inadequate handling of the assault case involving Bansal, who was reportedly attacked while performing his duties as an advocate.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by the Delhi Police in maintaining operational integrity while also addressing grievances raised by the legal community. As investigations continue, the police force is seeking to restore order and reconcile with local advocates, potentially setting the stage for a complex dialogue on police practices and lawyer relations in the capital.
