Delhi Delivery Executive Dies After Alleged Assault Over Currency Note
A Delhi delivery executive tragically died by suicide shortly before his 24th birthday, reportedly following an assault related to a torn Rs 10 note. The individual, identified as Sameer Hussain, encountered a distressing situation on October 4 during a delivery in East Vinod Nagar when he requested a customer to replace the damaged note or cancel the order. Authorities stated that Sameer was allegedly attacked by two individuals in connection with this encounter.
Hussain's distress was captured in a video recorded prior to his death, where he expressed feelings of humiliation and frustration, stating that his self-respect had been compromised. He claimed he was assaulted after requesting the replacement of the currency note and stated that he was slapped multiple times.
According to police reports, an emergency call was placed at 11.03 PM on October 4. Following the incident, Hussain sought medical attention after ingesting a toxic substance and was admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where he ultimately succumbed on October 20. His death has been classified under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to the abetment of suicide. The two accused, identified as Rakesh alias Bunty and Rampal Singh, have been arrested and face charges in connection with the incident.
In his video, Hussain described his work ethic, noting he had opted for a delivery job to support his family due to his financial constraints. He spoke about delivering on a bicycle as he did not possess a vehicle and reiterated his dedication to honest work.
Describing the specifics of the incident, Hussain recounted a delay from the customer, claiming he had waited approximately 15 minutes while they procured cash for a coffee order amounting to around Rs 150. After asking to exchange the torn note politely, Hussain alleged that the customer had become aggressive and physically assaulted him.
His uncle, Md Sameer, attested to the account, stating that the altercation escalated when Rampal slapped Hussain and then attacked him with an iron rod at Rakesh's instigation. After the incident, Hussain returned to report the attack to his manager, who allegedly failed to take appropriate action against the assailants.
Hussain's family has voiced their concerns over his death, alleging that they faced intimidation from his employer and were hindered from seeking justice. His mother, Kalima, shared that her son had received disparaging remarks during the dispute, including threats regarding political connections, pointing out the societal issues surrounding poverty.
As investigations continue, the case has drawn attention to the welfare of delivery workers in India, highlighting the challenges they face in securing safety and rights within their profession. Authorities are currently pursuing all angles of the case and are committed to providing clarity on the circumstances leading to Hussain's death.
