Delhi Auto and Taxi Unions Demand Fare Increase Amid CNG Price Surge

Auto rickshaw and taxi unions in Delhi are calling for an increase in fares following a recent rise in compressed natural gas (CNG) prices. The unions are threatening to strike if their demands are not addressed in a timely manner.

The cost of CNG has recently increased by ₹3.89 per kilogram, a move attributed to escalating import costs and geopolitical tensions affecting global fuel supplies. The unrest in regions such as West Asia has disrupted critical shipping routes for natural gas, impacting prices. As a result, the transport unions have expressed concerns over their operational viability and have stated that current fares are no longer sustainable.

A spokesperson from the Delhi Auto Rickshaw and Taxi Union remarked, “With the latest price hike, maintaining profitability while serving our customers has become very challenging.” The unions argue that the government's failure to address the cost concerns will ultimately affect service availability and could lead to transport disruptions.

Indraprastha Gas Limited, which manages CNG supply in Delhi, has stated that they are working to shield consumers from the full impact of market fluctuations while ensuring a stable supply of gas. Despite these efforts, the unions believe that fare hikes are necessary for their members to cope with increasing operational costs.

If negotiations do not yield a satisfactory response from authorities, the unions have indicated that they would consider striking. The situation has raised concerns among daily commuters who rely heavily on auto rickshaws and taxis for transportation within the capital city.
