Delay in Kerala CM Decision Intensifies Internal Congress Tensions
The wait for Kerala's new CM has led to the rise of anti-Gandhi posters, revealing rifts within Congress as leadership remains undecided.

The uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a new Chief Minister in Kerala has sparked significant unrest within the Congress party. As the deliberation extends into its tenth day, factions have emerged, with prominent leaders such as KC Venugopal, VD Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala vying for the top position.

Posters expressing discontent surfaced outside the District Congress Committee office in Wayanad, targeting Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. One poster warned them against supporting KC Venugopal, who entered the race late, stating, “Mr Rahul and Priyanka, forget Wayanad. You won’t win again from here.” Another highlighted the potential consequences of a poor decision, suggesting Wayanad could become the next Amethi, a reference to Rahul Gandhi's previous electoral defeat.

The growing tension within the Congress party has raised concerns not only among its members but also among its allies in the United Democratic Front (UDF). The lack of a clear leader following the recent Assembly elections has caused frustration. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed that discussions regarding the chief ministerial post are complete and an announcement is expected soon.

As of now, KC Venugopal seems to be the frontrunner, bolstered by support from a majority of the 63 Congress MLAs. However, both Satheesan and Chennithala have their advocates within the party, with Satheesan receiving backing from key allies like the Indian Union Muslim League. This internal strife is further complicated by the prospect of by-elections should Venugopal be appointed, as he would need to vacate his current parliamentary seat.

The delay in announcing the new Chief Minister has also emboldened opposition from parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), which have been critical of Congress’s inability to reach a consensus. The BJP has labelled the situation as indicative of confusion within Congress, questioning its leadership effectiveness following a decisive electoral win.

While consultations continue, the urgency to resolve this leadership dilemma grows. Congress leaders outside the state have expressed the necessity for immediate action to retain voter confidence and strengthen the coalition's standing. As tensions simmer, the political landscape in Kerala awaits the imminent decision from the Congress party, which could have far-reaching implications for its future in the state.
