Deadly Blast in Bhubaneswar: Two Fatalities Confirmed
A recent explosion in the Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has resulted in two fatalities and left four individuals critically injured. The incident, which occurred on January 27, was captured by CCTV footage that illustrates the sudden ferocity of the blast, revealing flames erupting from behind rooftop water tanks and smoke billowing into the sky. The sheer force of the explosion sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood and triggered chaos among residents. According to local police, the blast is believed to have happened during the handling of explosive materials on the building's rooftop.
Four victims were initially transported to the Capital Hospital before being transferred to a private medical facility for further treatment. Unfortunately, a woman and her son succumbed to their injuries shortly after the explosion. The Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jagmohan Meena, identified Shahnawaz Malik as the primary suspect in the incident, noting that he has a history of criminal activity.
Authorities are investigating allegations of illegal bomb-making, as preliminary findings suggest that Shahnawaz Malik, along with an associate named Amiya Malik, his mother, and another accomplice, were involved in the manufacture of explosive devices within the house. During the investigation, gunpowder was retrieved from the explosion site, reinforcing suspicions of bomb-making activities.
"The main injured person had a criminal record earlier. It appears they were planning some kind of criminal activity, for which they might have been making a bomb. Four people were injured in the blast while making the explosives," DCP Jagmohan Meena stated.
Given the gravity of the situation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has assumed control of the case to conduct a more thorough investigation. This follows the establishment of a Special Investigation Team by local police prior to the NIA's involvement. Investigators are currently analysing the CCTV footage and gathering forensic evidence to ascertain the specific cause of the explosion and whether a wider conspiracy was at play.
In light of the ongoing investigation, security measures in and around Sundarpada have been heightened to ensure public safety and respond to any emerging threats.
