Critics Weigh In on New Michael Jackson Biopic 'Michael'
The biopic 'Michael', starring Jaafar Jackson, faces criticism for excluding key controversies in Michael Jackson's life.

The newly released biopic 'Michael', featuring Jaafar Jackson as his famous uncle, has sparked a mixed response from film critics. With direction from Antoine Fuqua and a screenplay by John Logan, the film chronicles Michael Jackson's rise to fame, from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his immense success as a solo artist.

Critics have described the film as a "whitewash", citing its failure to address significant controversies surrounding Jackson, particularly the allegations of child sexual abuse that have clouded his legacy. The omission of these allegations has led to accusations that the film presents a sanitised version of Jackson's life.

Despite its focus on Jackson's musical achievements and visuals, several reviewers have expressed disappointment in the film's depth and engagement with Jackson's complex character. For instance, the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw stated that the film is filled with clichés and likened it to "cruise-ship entertainment". He remarked that it neglects to portray Michael's experiences as an abuse victim under his father Joe Jackson's strict and often abusive regime.

Jaafar Jackson's performance has been highly praised, with many noting his uncanny resemblance to the pop icon and his impressive recreation of Michael's dance moves. In contrast, Colman Domingo's portrayal of Joe Jackson was described as powerful, highlighting the strained relationship between father and son.

The film pivots around Michael's musical genius, from his perfect pitch at age 10 to his innovative music videos and stage performances. It features several classic hits but notably does not confront the later controversies that deeply impacted Jackson's reputation.

While the Hollywood Reporter noted that fans of Jackson's music would find joy in the film's nostalgic nods, many critics have called out the lack of a more nuanced exploration of the artist's life. Kevin Maher from the Times summarised it as a moment in the music biopic genre that utterly disconnects from reality, labelling it as an infamous release among recent musical portrayals.

Fuqua and Logan's approach to the film was partially shaped by legal constraints arising from a non-disclosure agreement, which resulted in the removal of footage related to the allegations against Jackson.

The film concludes in the late 1980s, merely hinting at the controversies that would later arise. This reframing has been critiqued for stripping the narrative of its humanity and leaving it lacking in emotional resonance. Critic Clarisse Loughrey from the Independent condemned the biopic as a “ghoulish cash grab”, questioning its authenticity and character representation.

As the debate continues, 'Michael' has opened discussions regarding entertainment's struggle to address uncomfortable truths, particularly surrounding influential figures like Jackson. While some celebrate the film for its vibrant depiction of his music and artistry, others lament its shortcomings in addressing his profound legacy — both the triumphs and tragedies that defined it.
